From the San Francisco Bay Guardian, April 1, 2001 Pinq
Quiet Games for Hot Weather (self-released)
Why did this band name itself Pinq? Is it because the members identify with that whiny guy in Reservoir Dogs who gets stuck with an uncool color moniker? Consider this lyric from the cheerless "Drinking Song" as evidence: "You're only angry because you're losing." Only the shortchanged Mr. Pinks of the world can offer such insight. Or could it be that they feel their sprawling rock-scapes resemble Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here"? Pinq's album will give you that "space-cadet glow," but it doesn't have those endless drives through arid sonic territory. Instead it soars over monuments of blasting distortion with lovely harmonic phrases that keep your lids from closing. And the album isn't all slow build to nova-bursting intensity; there are also the heavy rhythms and addictive melodies necessary to create traditional rock songs.

On "L.M.O.E.," which stands for Last Man on Earth, singer-guitarist Tim Mitchell's ample tenor range puts a pretty twist of dignity into the whole business of pleading with your girlfriend not to dump your brooding emo ass. Normally it's a diss when someone begins with "If you were the last man on earth." But thanks to the impressively catchy "Some Somewhere Now," the piercing instrumental part on "Careful Not to Mention the Obvious," and basically every track on this gorgeous recording that mixes in backward loops and dramatic keyboard flourishes, we can say that if Pinq were the last band on earth, the planet would definitely still rock.
